Porn Palaver

I should have updated my blog earlier, but i have been quite busy working. And working at the orientation office isn't that bad, I get to work wiith new students and enjoy their benefits.
My head right now is in a riot of issues to blog about. But, I'm going to take it slow, bringing out these issues slowly.
If you are very conversant with what's happening in Nigeria, you might have come across this news. It talks about an hausa movie star(you didn't know they made movies right?) who is been accused of being in a porn flick. While, her partner is really not featured in the news, he is rather named as witheld. Typical right? I don't like being tribalistic and generalizing, but most people from the north are plain sexist. Surprisingly, they are proud of it, and do not realize any depravity in this sexist culture. Sexism is present in every part of Nigeria. It is embedded in our culture, even if it differs in its gravity from one place to another. The overall fact is that most tribes in Nigeria put men and women into certain roles. Even if the Yoruba culture is one of the few cultures in Nigeria that is less sexist, as every gender is entitled to the same things, but we still subject each gender to certain roles. You can't really argue that it is bad, as men and women are different in many aspects, and it is only human for us to assign them into roles based on these differences. The west that we use as a yard stick for measuring what is fundamentally right also puts people into roles based on gneder. Even if they are at a certain level of gender equality, they still assign people to certain roles, based on gender
Back to the juicier issue on hausa porn. The women are always blamed in such cases by the Sharia system, while we never hear anything about the men. I have gotten to know a few hausa men, and the way they regard women in general is quite appalling. I remeber when we had a gateman, and he got into arguement with me on the way women caress men who are not their husbands all in the name of movies. As for me who even thought the romance and sex scenes in Nigerian movies are crap. I was surprised to see that he was offended by it. It was through him that I saw my first hausa movie (never trying it again). There were no sex or romance scenes. That didn't bother me, but the fact that if there was, this guy was going to be angry not at the couple but the woman. We have heard of various cases of women accused of adultery or fornication, and are to be stoned to death. And most northerners I have met are in support of it.
Well, guys that's Nigeria for you, it's so complex with many problems. Hopefully, there will be an end to all these nonsense we hear.

Yes I think you nailed it by highlighting the Sharia influence. The Hausa male attitude to females is less to do with gender and more to do with their interpretation of Sharia law. Over the years this has become encoded in their culture and beliefs.

It would be wrong to attribute the attitudes to Islam alone because as with most religions, it often comes down to interpretation. The question here is where does religion end and culture begin? After all a sizeable proportion of the Yorubas are also Muslim. Does the subjugation of women exist within this subculture to the extent it does in the North?

Good post. Some food for thought there.....

ugo: first-off, don't let ur current girlfy read ur comment...cos if she were like me, she'd be laying down some ground rules asap.

second-off; not even sure wot to make of this sharia craziness...peoples mind-set can be very appalling, but when i take a second look, u really can't blame anyone for the kind of mind-set they have ...'cos it has a lot to do with background and upbringing. If me and you had both been brought up in the hausa region, some of the custom would have been embedded in us and I bet we wldn't think there was anything wrong with our outlook on certain things.

@ atutupoyoyo(love this name, can you pls remind me what it means) Thanks for giving more light to this post.

@ ugo daniels-hmm. So you loved the submissiveness, that's cool. But I kinda like some agressiveness lol.Still, your present gf shouldn't read the comment sha

@ labelle you are right, it brings me back to one of my last post where I stated that most people get their values from their backgrounds.

Thanks for your comment on my blog. I can appreciate your anger about the Kannywood situation; it frustrates and upsets me as well, as does the sexism I've seen, but you are vastly oversimplifying an entire region, ie. The North, which is comprised of scores of different languages and cultures, although the overall trade language is Hausa. (And, as per sexism, it's not merely a foible of the "North." I've seen people be just as sexist in the "South.") Furthermore, your "proof" for all this sexism comes from various generalized encounters you've had. Your gateman is the only specific person you mention.

Actually, the actress's boyfriend's name was given in several of the articles I read: it's Usman Bobo. Check out this article in Leadership which is edited by Ibrahim Sheme, a "Northerner": http://www.leadershipnigeria.com/product_info.php?products_id=11227&osCsid=b7ef438aa96c5f614fb2b16586d87810

Just out of curiosity why will you never try watching a Hausa movie again? This is my area of research, so I'm curious.

Cheers

@talatu. thanks for the comment. I'm guilty of generalizing the north. But you really can't blame me, because every time I meet men and women from the north (other than my gateman), there is this sexism evident in their behaviours.
But you know that most cases like these always fall on the woman's head. It is a good thing though that the boyfriend's name was mentioned. At least they get to share equal punishment.
As for the hausa movies, they're okay but just not my thing.

I know what you mean... Just trying to discourage generalizations which lead to stereotypes which lead to miscommunication... {-; The whole country has a lot of work to do on overcoming sexism (ie. see recent arrests of women for "indecent dressing" in Lagos).

stay well.

im yet to meet a non sexist nigerian male. my husband seems to have kept this part of him well hidden
anyway
religion is way too much trouble. Christianity is almost as sexist, in fact the subtleness of its brand is more insulting to me.

Sexism is all over the place. Its origin is tied to the origin of man. Change has occured, is occuring. Some areas are just slower than others and some men who are afraid of women choose to hold tightly to those traditions.

I met a Nigerian man recently and was shocked by the level of sexism he displayed. We went out for a drink as friends but he expected sex out of nowehere at the end of the night when he didn't get it.

He grabbed me physically twice - the second time I showed him the door for good. He wanted a situation where I wasn't allowed to know where he lived but he could come round to my flat and have sex whenever he wanted it.

It saddens me to think Nigerian men think this horrible behaviour is normal.

Afolabi said...

@ anonymos- you have every right to think that way. I'm going to be honest with you, Most Nigerian men are used to women( Nigerian) saying No when they really mean yes. It is possible he might have thought you were playing hard to get. This just shows the sexism present in Nigeria, where the women sometimes don'texpress their true feelings for fear of being judged.

You mean... that the men frequently misinterpret the women's intentions, or that the women do actually mislead them, for fear of seeming overly forward?

Is Nigeria more or less sexist on balance than somewhere like the IS?

From a commonsense standpoint, the man involved is not popular so the media does not bother mentioning him. This isn't a Hausa thing. It certainly isn't Islamic as the religious prescribes the same punishment for the two parties involved. Again naturally men are more carnal. This has been scientifically proven. When Islam tells women to act or dress a certain way, it is not subjugation. In many ways you could see it as regarding women as the more responsible sex. I am a Muslim so might be tendentious on this issue but Islam is commonsense; just try not to be insular and reason with it.
